Finland leaves the war
Helsinki · Moscow
In September 1944 Bulgaria and Finland left the war. On 19 September an armistice with Finland was signed in Moscow. The northern front, stretching from Ladoga to the Barents Sea, fell silent.
In the summer of 1944 the Red Army broke through strong fortifications on the Karelian Isthmus and freed Vyborg and Petrozavodsk. Finland agreed to an armistice and undertook to break with Germany.
For the first time in three years the threat to Leningrad from the north was gone for good.
