Paris is free

Paris

On 25 August 1944 French and American troops, together with Parisians who had risen up, liberated Paris. Meanwhile the Soviet-French “Normandie-Niemen” air regiment was fighting on the Eastern Front.

Paris rose up even before the Allied armies arrived: barricades went up in the streets as in the days of revolution. The first to enter the city were the tank crews of General Leclerc's French division.

French pilots of the Normandie–Niemen regiment fought as part of the Soviet air force. In the summer of 1944 the regiment was given the honorary name “Niemen” for its battles over the river Neman.
