Belgrade
On 20 October 1944 Soviet troops and the Yugoslav People’s Liberation Army freed Belgrade. And in the far north, on 25 October, the Norwegian town of Kirkenes was liberated, the first in Norway.
Street fighting in Belgrade went on for almost a week. Soviet and Yugoslav soldiers fought side by side, and the people met them with flowers. Soviet soldiers killed freeing the city lie in the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade.
In those same days, in the far north, the Red Army drove the enemy off the Kola Peninsula and freed northern Norway.
