Budapest is taken

Budapest

On 13 February 1945 the battle for Budapest ended. The capital of Hungary, Germany’s last ally in Europe, was freed after long street fighting.

The last fighting was in the Buda fortress on the hill above the Danube. The trapped troops tried to break out, but only a few succeeded. Almost every bridge over the Danube had been blown up.

When the fighting died down, the townspeople began clearing the rubble, and Soviet units helped get food into the ruined capital.
