On 6 June 1944 troops from the USA, Britain, Canada and their allies landed in Normandy. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Germany was now squeezed from east and west.

On the first day about 156,000 soldiers came ashore, supported by thousands of ships and aircraft. The five landing beaches had code names: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. At Omaha the Americans suffered heavy losses.

Soviet people had long been waiting for the second front. Now Germany was truly fighting on two fronts, and that brought the common victory closer.
