days to free all of Crimea

In 1941–42 its defenders had held Sevastopol for 250 days; in 1944 Soviet troops freed it in just a few days of assault. On 9 May 1944, exactly one year before Victory Day, the flag flew over the city again.

The main obstacle was Sapun Mountain, a fortified height above the city. On 7 May soldiers stormed its slopes under relentless fire and took it by evening. Two days later the flag rose over Sevastopol again.

The sailors returned to their main base. The city lay in ruins, almost every house destroyed. But the people of Sevastopol began rebuilding at once.
