On 6 November 1943 Kiev was liberated. The city on the Dnieper had been occupied for more than two years. That evening Moscow saluted the liberators with 24 salvos from 324 guns.
The main blow came not from the southern bridgehead, where the enemy expected it, but from the northern one at Lyutezh. A whole tank army was moved there secretly at night, leaving dummy tanks and guns behind.
Kiev had been occupied for more than two years. Its most terrible memory is the ravine of Babi Yar, where the enemy shot tens of thousands of people, most of them Jews.
