On 18 January 1943 troops of the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts met on the southern shore of Lake Ladoga. A railway was built through the narrow corridor in just 17 days. Trains reached the city, and there was more bread.

Leningrad Front soldiers attacked across the ice of the Neva under fire, while the Volkhov Front fought its way towards them. On 18 January they met at Workers' Settlements No. 1 and No. 5 and embraced. The radio told Leningraders: the siege is broken! People poured into the streets in the middle of the night.

The railway through the narrow corridor along Ladoga was called the “Road of Victory”. It ran so close to the enemy that trains were often shelled, but the drivers got them through to the city.
