The trams are ringing again!

Leningrad

In spring, Leningraders came out together and cleared the city of snow and rubbish. And on 15 April 1942 trams ran through the streets again. People cried with joy at the sound of their bells: the city was alive!

All winter the trams stood buried in snow wherever the power had failed. In spring weakened people, mostly women and teenagers, came out with crowbars and shovels: mountains of snow and filth had to be cleared so that epidemics would not break out.

In March a cargo tram started running, and on 15 April a passenger one. People stopped, listened to the bells and told each other: “We survived.”
