The Victory Banner over the Reichstag

The Reichstag, Berlin

On the night of 30 April to 1 May 1945, scouts Mikhail Yegorov and Meliton Kantaria, led by Lieutenant Alexei Berest, raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag. On 2 May the Berlin garrison surrendered. Soldiers wrote their names on the Reichstag walls.

Inside the Reichstag every room and staircase was fought over. The Victory Banner was the assault flag of the 150th Rifle Division, a plain red flag on which the division's name was later written.

On the walls and columns of the Reichstag soldiers wrote where they had come from and their names: “We made it!” When the building was restored, some of the inscriptions were preserved.
