On 26 March 1944 Soviet troops reached the Prut river, the state border where the war had begun almost three years earlier. Soldiers who had fought across thousands of kilometres kissed the ground on its bank.

Reaching the border meant the invaders had been driven out of a huge part of the country. Soldiers who had retreated from here in the summer of 1941 were now coming back. Some took a handful of earth from the bank of the Prut and kept it until the end of the war.

Ahead lay the battles to free other peoples of Europe and more than another year of war.
