On 27 January 1944 the siege of Leningrad was fully lifted. That evening a salute thundered over the Neva: 24 salvos from 324 guns. People poured into the streets, crying and hugging. The city had endured.

The offensive began on 14 January from the Oranienbaum bridgehead and the Pulkovo Heights. In two weeks the enemy was pushed back 60–100 kilometres from the city. Shells no longer burst in the streets, and the signs could be painted over: “Citizens! During shelling this side of the street is the most dangerous.”

Estimates of the Leningraders who died in the siege range from 600,000 to more than a million. Most of them are buried in the Piskaryovskoye Cemetery.

No one is forgotten, and nothing is forgotten.
