Smolensk is free again

Smolensk

On 25 September 1943 ancient Smolensk was liberated, the city where in 1941 the enemy had first been held up for a long time. It was almost completely destroyed, but its people immediately began to rebuild.

As it retreated the enemy blew up and burned houses, and only a small part of the city's buildings survived. But the ancient Dormition Cathedral and the fortress wall built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries still stood.

People who had been hiding in forests and cellars came out to meet the soldiers. Belarus lay ahead.

Chapter 28 · September 1943

To the Dnieper!

The Red Army freed the Donbass, Bryansk and Smolensk and reached the Dnieper. The enemy called the river its “Eastern Wall” and hoped to hold it. The Allies landed in Italy, and Italy left the war.
