air sorties in a single day

On 23 August 1942 hundreds of enemy planes bombed Stalingrad. The city was almost entirely reduced to ruins. But in those ruins soldiers and residents kept fighting for every street.

In a single day the enemy flew about two thousand sorties. Houses and oil tanks burned, and blazing oil spread across the Volga. Thousands of civilians died that day.

The same day enemy tanks reached the Volga north of the city. Young women anti-aircraft gunners stood in their way: they lowered their gun barrels and fired at the tanks point-blank. Many of them did not return from that fight.
